![]() ![]() Phew and Yamamoto joined Yoshihide for 1999's Otomo Yoshihide Plays the Music of Takeo Yamashita, a tribute to the television music composer that also featured Haco, Sachiko M, and many other artists from Tokyo's underground music scene. Two years later, Yamamoto and Phew collaborated on Shiwase No Sumika, a set of comparatively poppy songs. ![]() Phew, along with Yoshihide, Boredoms' Seiichi Yamamoto, and drummer Masahiro Uemura among others, then formed the genre-defying supergroup Novo Tono, who released their debut album, Panorama Paradise, in 1996. That year, she and Kondo also teamed up for a cover of Blondie's "Sunday Girl" that appeared on the compilation Megabank Presents Tribute to New Wave. Another effort that mixed challenging and pop-oriented fare, it counted Otomo Yoshihide and Tatsuo Kondo among Phew's collaborators. Phew remained busy for the rest of the '90s, first working with Anton Fier on 1993's Dreamspeed and the following year's Blind Light, then delivering her third album, Himitsu no Knife, in 1995. She signed to Mute for the following year's album Our Likeness, which reunited her with Plank and Liebezeit and featured contributions from Alexander Hacke and Chrislo Haas in its wide-ranging experiments. Phew returned in 1987 with View, which balanced her avant-garde impulses with pop polish, and emerged again with 1991's moody EP Songs. Largely improvised, 1981's Phew won praise for its expressive mix of electronics and post-punk as well as Phew's voice, which earned her comparisons to Nico. For her first full-length, Phew worked with Can's Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit at the German studio of Conny Plank, who also produced the album. To make her debut as a solo artist, she worked with Yellow Magic Orchestra's Ryuichi Sakamoto, an Aunt Sally fan who produced 1980's single "Finale/Urahara" in turn, Phew appeared on Sakamoto's single "Shuukyoku." That year, she also performed on singer/songwriter and actor Agata Morio's album Norimono Zukan. When she returned, she formed the punk group Aunt Sally with guitarist Bikke, keyboardist Mayu, bassist Kataoka, and drummer Takashi Maruyama, but the band split up soon after releasing their 1979 self-titled debut album, which was released in a limited edition of 400 copies. By the time of 2021's mesmerizing New Decade, Phew was finally receiving the international acclaim she deserved.īorn Hiromi Moritani in Osaka, Phew got her start in the 1970s, when she became so fascinated with punk music that she flew to London in 1977 to see the Sex Pistols. Following 2010's playful covers album Five Finger Discount, she focused on experimental soundscapes woven around her distinctive vocals, as on uncompromising releases such as 2015's A New World and 2017's Light Sleep. When she returned to her solo career in the early 2010s, Phew created some of her most striking music. ![]() Following 1995's sultry Himitsu No Knife, collaborations dominated her music, and her work with the Japanese experimental supergroup Novo Tono, the punk band Most, and various projects with Otomo Yoshihide kept her busy well into the 2000s. For her 1980 solo debut single, she teamed with Ryuichi Sakamoto and worked with members of Can on 1981's Phew and 1992's Our Likeness, both of which proved her formidable vocals and experimental sensibilities could match her collaborators' legacy of challenging their audience. After leaving the pioneering Japanese punk band Aunt Sally, she worked with a who's-who of other innovative artists from around the globe to express the different sides of her artistry. A boundary-breaking artist with a lengthy career, Phew has explored rock, electronic, and avant-garde sounds on her own terms since the 1970s. ![]() ![]() Whether or not the content being downloaded is legal or illegal is completely up to the individual. Earlier, when Jesus commissioned his disciples, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, sending them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick (Luke 9:1-2).Īfter this Jesus sent out 72 others to do the same (Luke 10:1). Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:18-19). Just before ascending into heaven, the Risen Lord Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. God has given us authority in Christ to silence the other sources and clear the way to hear God’s voice and be confident that it is God speaking. In the book Daring to Live on the Edge, Youth With a Mission (YWAM) founder Loren Cunningham points out that impressions on our spirit will come from one of four sources: (1) your own mind (2) the mind of others (e.g., the world) (3) the mind of Satan (e.g., demons) and (4) the mind of God. But what about those other voices? How can we be sure we are hearing only from our Lord? It is part of our birthright when we are born again by the Holy Spirit and become followers of Jesus. Our Lord Jesus is very happy to lead us as his disciples and those who follow him should be able to hear his voice and receive the guidance we need. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd” (John 10:16, emphasis mine). “I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. Later Jesus alludes to the gentiles who will also hear his voice and follow him. “But they will never follow a stranger in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice” (John 10:5). In the next verse, Jesus makes the point that we should not follow any other voice. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice” (John 10:3-4, emphasis mine). He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. “The gatekeeper opens the gate for, and the sheep listen to his voice. Jesus is able to lead us precisely because we hear his voice and follow after him. As Jesus’s sheep, we should be able to listen to his voice and follow him because we clearly recognize his voice. These are times when we can seek God’s guidance through listening prayer.Īccording to Jesus, we are his sheep, the flock of his pasture. There are lots of voices telling us very different messages, and too often we find ourselves challenged and confused about what we should do in a given situation or what is really the best way ahead. Yet we are constantly being bombarded with the noise of the world all around us. This is really important because as followers of Jesus, we all desire to do the right thing and make the wisest choices. We focus our time of prayer on intentional, purposeful listening and let God do the talking. We wait on God in a time of silence, giving the Lord opportunity to speak to us. In making our request, we give God’s guidance authority over the other voices we hear throughout our daily lives. Listening prayer centers around a clear request for God’s guidance. But prayer is really more like a dialogue, where we speak with God and the Lord speaks to us. Most of us picture prayer sort of like a monologue: We talk to God, sharing our heartfelt thanks and offering up our petitions and requests. ![]() ![]() ![]() We want to help you get the things you need so your life is free of financial stress. ![]() ![]() It was said that he had a strong Confucian education before he became a Buddhist monk, and he applied a Confucian appreciation of literary scholarship to his study of Buddhism. Xuedou Chongxian (980–1052) was a master of the Yunmen house who liked to write commentaries. The Circle of the Way gives a brief history of koan practice: Instead of making no sense, it makes perfect sense. It was during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE) that the great gongan (Chinese) or koan collections were put to paper: The Blue Cliff Record ( Bìyán Lù or Hekiganroku), The Gateless Barrier ( Wúménguān or Mumonkan), The Book of Serenity ( Cóngróng lù or Shōyōroku), and The Record of Empty Hall, though the latter is less known to westerners. ![]() "The master is saying, you're so eager that you're missing the forest for the trees. "When you look at it that way, the meaning of the koan is clear," says Heine. But through his research, Heine traced the koan back to a temple in Japan called the Cypress Forest Temple, which was surrounded by cypress trees. What? On the surface, it looks like another mind game. An eager monk asks his master, "Why did Zen come to Japan from China?" The master answers, "There is a cypress tree in the courtyard." ![]() "If you immerse yourself in the context of the original tradition - which includes mythology, legends and cultural symbols from China, Japan and Korea - then you start to pick up on the obscure references," he says. While Heine admits that some koans are simply mind games designed to break our brains and force us into new ways of seeing, others are rooted in ancient traditions that are hidden to most modern readers. You will die from my pitchfork even if you do not explain it. What kinds of demons made you become a Buddhist priest? What kind of devil forced you to take up this pilgrimage? You will die from my pitchfork even if you explain it. It can take years to "solve" and the solution, as determined by the master, will vary according to what the individual student needs to learn. "Joshu's Dog" is one of the first koans presented to students of Zen Buddhism. Instead of simply saying, "Yes, every living thing has the Buddha nature," Joshu wants us to meditate night and day on the concept of "nothing" in order to think beyond "yes and no," "Buddha or no Buddha" and connect with something universally true. The koan is a way of "completely uproot all the normal workings of one's mind," wrote Mumon. Indeed your ego-shell suddenly is crushed, you can shake heaven and earth. As a fruit ripening in season, your internality and externality spontaneously become one. Then, all the useless knowledge you have diligently learned until now is thrown away. It is neither nothingness, nor its relative "not" of "is" and "is not." It must be like gulping a hot iron ball that you can neither swallow nor spit out. into this question of what "Mu" is day and night, without ceasing, hold it before you. Would you like to pass through this barrier? Then concentrate your whole body. This is why it is called the Gateless Gate of Zen. The story is a means to an end."įor the pursuit of Zen, you must pass through the barriers (gates) set up by the Zen masters. "The koan is an instrument to get you from un-enlightenment to enlightenment," says Heine, "But it's more about the interaction you have with your teacher than the story itself. That's why koans often seem contradictory, paradoxical and downright random. Zen masters use koans to startle and disarm their students, and shake them from their spiritual slumber. ![]() While every wisdom tradition uses stories to teach moral and spiritual truths (Jesus, for example, taught using parables), there's something different about a koan. "Two or more individuals have a brief exchange - which can include words, gestures, even silence - and through that encounter, some kind of ignorance is exposed and understanding is revealed." "A koan is basically an encounter dialogue," says Heine. There are hundreds and hundreds of koans, but each one tells the story of a brief interaction - usually between a student and a teacher, but sometimes two teachers, or a teacher and a rival - that results in a sudden flash of insight. The best tool for peeling back those layers is the koan. ![]() ![]() ![]() So, the app developer should know exactly what to expect from the hardware. Ideally, a Boinc API that abstracts the different GPU specs and features needs be developed at the task level (unless this is already available) and the tasks should be distributed based on the specs and features requested. Opencl is general enough, but cuda offers more features. (more about this below)įor #2: Not sure it exists. If the GPU memory is not available, the task will have to wait. This has been possible on most architectures to overcome the additional time it takes to copy data over PCI pipeline to GPU RAM (from the regular CPU RAM). Often we do the allocation and copy the data over the PCI pipeline to the GPU card while the other cores are busy and computing the existing jobs. What if a job's GPU usage changes halfway through a job? A RAM allocation request might fail because we're running other GPU jobs.įor #1: I agree, but the order should be first about allocating the memory, then launching on available cores though. Are there cross-platform, cross-vendor APIs for finding usage info? I couldn't find any last time I looked. The client can run additional GPU jobs only if they fit in both. "GPU usage" is two separate things: number of cores used, and amount of (video) RAM used.I attached the script I used for milkyway here for reference įully using powerful GPUs is a good goal, but it's complicated: This will be increasingly needed more, not less. The newer compute cards have significantly more computation capacity (GP100 and GV100 compute cards), so I believe this is something you want to address better and optimally in the Boinc Manager. The servers I donated their free capacity to Boinc have all more than one K6000 cards on them (per motherboard). Instead of queueing, the task can be assigned to the next gpu card on the same motherboard. Most modern gpus (since 2010 and later) allow the load inquiries, it is not a rocket science. So, these inefficiencies can add up quickly. I left it at 4 tasks per gpu for now because I cannot actively monitor Boinc, so the gpu is under utilized by 33% when its idle time is donated to Boinc projects. It increased output by 4 times obviously, but the load on the gpu is still around 55-60% and memory usage is negligibly small.Įach gpu can easily handle up to 5 tasks and sometimes 6, but that critical last 16% depends on the load (so that it does not exceed 100%) and it needs to be dynamically monitored (but it won't crash the gpu, but queued). So, each NVidia K6000 card uses 4 tasks per gpu. I copied and pasted the configuration above into the project directory (Milky Way), set the gpu_usage to 0.25 and cpu_usage (for gpu tasks) to 0.1. Most modern (gpu) hardware will queue the task and won't launch when the resources (memory and cores) requested are not available anyway. The first criteria is always the memory, but then the computational load. In the long run, the user code should supply hints about the maximum load it will use in advance. In the short run, Boinc manager can readily start multiple GPU tasks on a single GPU and check the load on the GPU. Therefore, the user code should be able to notify Boinc manager about the compute cores it will be taking for GPU tasks and additional tasks should be allowed by the Boinc manager up to total compute cores. But, it may be better to communicate with the user code about the resource needs. Therefore, Boinc manager can launch automatically as well. I believe all NVidia and AMD compute cards report the computational load and memory utilization. The current design will result in increasingly less resource utilization (or underutilization) as the hardware is becoming more and more powerful. ![]() What needs to happen is a better load balancer to launch more than one task per GPU. I see the projects like and running GPU tasks for 3-5 minutes. Basically, the compute kernels launched do not have enough numeric complexity. But, I barely see 15-20% GPU load on a single GPU task. In other words, the GPU pipeline can easily handle several kernels simultaneously. These GPUs are older but they are still monsters in GFLOPs performance with over 2800 compute cores. I dedicated a few NVidia Quadro K6000 GPUs to various projects. ![]() |
